2nd NATIONALS
City - specific Tourneys were held at Chennai
(20th & 21st ,Oct.2001), Coimbatore (11th Nov,), Hyderabad
(18th Nov.) and Mysore (10th & 11th Dec. ) to short list
the Children to be invited to the 2nd Nationals.
The 2nd National Scrabble Championship
was held on the 6th & 7th Jan, 2002 at Hotel Breeze, Chennai.
The weather was balmy and there was rain too. Children found
it difficult to resist the temptation - and they did it in
the best way - by yielding to it - releasing paper boats and
tracking with delight their (Boats) meandering journey.
53 (Fifty three) children participated in
the tourney. They were divided into 3 groups of 18 each, Master
Shyam Sunder (P.S.S.Chennai), Master Ramakumar (St. Andrews,
Hyderabad) and Master Karthik (St. Joseph - State - Mysore)
were given top seeding in their respective groups. At the
end of the 1st day, all the three topped their respective
groups, with Master SOUPORNO GHOSH (of Kolkata) standing a
rank behind Shyam, They were regrouped into A, B and C groups
for the 2nd day. Ranks 1 to 6 of each group forming Group
- A, Ranks 7 to 12 forming Group - B and ranks 13 to 18 Group
- C.
Master SOUPORNO GHOSH (7th STANDARD DON BOSCO,
PARK CIRCUS, KOLKATA) bagged the 1st Rank, winning all the
6 (six) games. Shyam got the 2nd Rank and Ramkumar the 3rd
Rank. Local girls V.M. SHUBHA (G.K.chetty Hindu Vidyashram)
and SHILPA RATNAM (Padma Sechadri) gave the top seeds a run
for their money.
Ms. APARNA of Chennai was the Chief Arbiter
of the event. A remarkable feature of the 2nd Nationals was
the conduct of the Tourney - Students and Teachers of Sri
Sarada Higher Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai, conducted
the tourney with assistance from local Scrabblers Ms. Radhika
Rao and Mr. Ganesh Babu.
Master SOUPARNO, SHYAM SUNDER and RAMKUMAR
were invited to play in the Senior Nationals 2002 Edition
to be held on the 27th & 28th July, 2002 at Pune.
