| REPORT & RANKINGS
Of
5th NATIONAL SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP
for
SCHOOL CHILDREN
Zygo Scrabble clubs conducted the 5th Nationals
from 27th 29th Dec, 04 at Sri Sarada Secondary School, Gopalaparam,
CHENNAI, Tamilnadu, India.
52 (Fifty two) children, from Kolkata, Mumbai, Mysore, Trichy
and Hyderabad took part in the unit. For the first time, Language
Appreciation (LP) was introduced. And the points logged in
LP was aggregated with the points secured in Scrabble to reckon
the final rankings.
After observing two minutes silence for
the victims of Tsunami, children played 11 (eleven) games
of scrabble and answered 7 (Seven) LP tests. Purav Damani
(3rd std) of Campion School, Mumbai won 9 out of 11 games
in Scrabble followed by Abhimanyu Das (9th std) of St. Thomas
School of Kolkata ( 8 out of 11 games).
The ‘Essay’ component of LP tests was an
interesting experience both for children, parents and zygo
clubs. Abhimanyu came up with an exhilarating effort in ‘essay
writing’ and edged past Purav with a fraction of margin. Others
wielded their pens with promises were: Warren Remedies (3rd
std) Campaign School, Mumbai, Sarayu (6th std) St. Gregorius
School, Mumbai and Laasya (7th std) Chaitanya Public School,
Hyderabad.
Victuals for the children were sourced from
one of the best eateries of Chennai, The Cosmopolitan Club.
Entry free of Rs.50/- (Rupees Fifty) per player was collected.
The entry fee of Rupees 2,600/- (Two thousand six hundred),
with the consent of the children, was donated to the Hindu
Relief Fund for the Tsunami victims.
Books and mementos were presented to the
children and a deluxe Scrabble Board (from USA) was presented
to Abhimanyu Das, the first ranker. Mattel India could not
sponsor any prizes but conveyed their best wishes. Zygo Scrabble
Clubs are proud to post Abhimanyu’s essay on their website
and request children, parents and teachers to read the same.
6th National Championship for School Children
will be held from 27th to 29th December 2005 at Bangalore.
